According to Jermaine Dupri, the late DMX once (allegedly) robbed a reporter from The Source magazine — but used his dog instead of a blick!

Over the weekend, your boy JD posted a clip on IG, one in which the So So Def founder spoke about DMX’s alleged pit-bull-centered stick-up.

In the clip, JD said the alleged robbery occurred while he was headed to the studio to hear a verse DMX laid for a track called, “Get Your Shit Straight.” For the record, JD said he did not actually witness the so-called robbery, but he did have first-hand knowledge about how said robbery went down.

So let’s start with what Dupri said about the reporter: according to JD, the alleged Source reporter was tasked with visiting the studio to observe the collaboration between the late Ruff Ryders rapper and Dupri himself. JD was hoping the reporter would be inspired to write an article about the session which would (at least theoretically) promote his debut studio album, Life in 1742

Apparently, the reporter was down for the cause because he was the first one to show up to the session. The second cat to show up was — you’ve guessed it — Dark Man X. As JD’s story goes, X pulled up to the studio with not one, but two, pit bulls. Upon pulling up, X supposedly saw the reporter, figured said reporter was food, then proceeded to rob the Hip Hop journalist of his goods  — all while threatening to sick the pit bulls on him if he didn’t comply.

The funny thing is, JD isn’t the only industry cat with wild DMX stories. According to a report about JD’s post, Brooklyn rapper Fabulous jumped in the comment section to say that everyone who’s ever rocked with X has “a wild DMX” story.

Speaking of which, back in 2019, rapper Jadakiss did an interview with Power 106. During that interview, Jada said if you ever saw X with his pit “Boomer,” you basically had to watch out ‘cause “[DMX was] robbing everything with his dog. Not armed robbery, dog robbery.”

The late DMX was one of the realest rappers in the game. His music was raw, honest, and, above all, gritty AF. Before X blew up in ’98 with his debut studio album, It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot, the “Get at Me Dog” rapper struggled to land a deal. Record execs didn’t want to sign X because they thought his music was too dark.

Thankfully, the founder of Murder Inc. — Irv Gotti — believed that the streets were ready for a real rapper like X. When Gotti was an A&R exec for Def Jam, he pushed hard for the label’s execs to sign the gritty rapper. But it was like trying to push a boulder up a steep hill.

After much prodding, Gotti convinced Def Jam’s decision makers to listen to DMX rap. And once they did, the rest was history: DMX signed to Def Jam, dropped two platinum albums in one year, and left an impression on Hip Hop culture that no other rapper, dead or alive, could match.
